Sitting in my living room and watching over my eleven month daughter is a Saturday ritual that I cherish! However, yesterday as we sat and giggled on the floor playing with plushy toys of the forrest animals I generally pursue, we were interrupted by a ruckus in the wood beam roof over our heads.
Curious as to what was making the noise I opened the door to our front patio only to have my heart jump through my chest as I was chased down by an angry rodent. Unbeknownst to me, I had an angry squirrel who was ready to die on his shield barking at me as if it were I who had intruded...
Once my heart rate came back to a relative baseline I was able to start thinking through how funny spring is... We have dealt with months of silence and now squirrels, birds, chipmunks, and every animal were beginning to nest and come out of all forms of hibernation.
Normally, I would grab my .22 rifle, dispatch the squirrel, save the meat, and tan the hide, but given the time of year I want to wait and see if this defensive squirrel is raising any babies... which would delay the inevitable by at least a few weeks.
I figure with the fresh air of spring in the air that everyone at least needs a shot at enjoying it for a little while — even if they are invaders in a space where they are not welcome.
